Geoguessers

Multichannel video installation and vinyl print

GeoGuessers is a game that uses maps made up of photographic panoramas, such as Google Street View (Google, 2017), in which players must guess the location based solely on the visible information. The game, originally developed by Swedish consultant Anton Wallén in 2013, has a stable community of enthusiasts, famous players, and a World Cup that in August 2025 will celebrate its third edition.

Expert players are capable of guessing the country in a matter of seconds, by recognizing architectural elements and infrastructures such as electric poles or identifying trees and other features of the landscape. The quality of the images themselves, the height at which the camera is positioned, or the blurring are other fundamental clues in a game that not only encourages geographic learning but also fosters specialized knowledge of today’s most popular navigation tools. Carlos Carbonell’s installation brings together various videos recorded and published by the players themselves on streaming platforms and social networks.
